Soul Food in Harlem

I heard about Sylvia’s two weeks ago and at a time when I was really craving some fried chicken. I finally had the chance to go today (due to a failed attempt at visiting Creole).

Brunch + Gospel Music = the best time I could ask for on a Sunday afternoon

Kudos to Guy for remembering the location (though we did have to ask this nice couple while walking up 5th Ave and W. 118th…) We turned at the corner and Guy said, “5th should just turn into Lennox Ave” – and voila, there was a dead end when we looked in the direction of further uptown *laughs* Instead, we saw a section of Marcus Garvey Park. It actually looked very inviting and I wouldn’t mind returning for a run, because there’s a hill and something that looks like a turret in one part of the square. The neighborhood that surrounded the park also reminded me of parts of the West Village. There were some brownstones (a few were boarded up) and it was quiet… it looked like a nice residential area. I wouldn’t mind living there at all. I doubt it’s anywhere near as expensive as the brownstones near campus.

Eventually, we found Lennox and headed up to W. 127th for some legendary soul food. We barely stepped inside and I could already smell the food at the door… and the music… I really love live music (especially, live GOSPEL music). I was just really happy the entire time. My breakfast consisted of eggs, grits, biscuit, fried chicken, and corn bread… SO SATISFYING

Sylvia's

Unfortunately, I couldn’t take a picture of my food this time around (not that you really need a visual of friend chicken) but trust me when I say that you will not leave craving something more (or something else, for that matter). It was a lot of food… a lot of COMFORT food :-)
